A Message from Alex:

Dear friends,

A big thank you to those who have already donated and put us on track to produce another Momenta Festival next fall! This ambitious--some even call it “herculean”--undertaking is only possible with your support.

Momenta has always been synonymous with new music, and this past year was no exception. Recent premieres include Eun Young Lee’s Pax Aeterna; Lawrence Kramer’s String Quartet No. 11; and Stephanie Griffin’s Overgrown Cathedral; as well as premieres of revised works by Atefeh Einali, Lia Su, and Dominic Wills at the Intimacy of Creativity Festival in Hong Kong. We also premiered almost a dozen works by Binghamton University composition students during our residency this past spring, and we look forward to seeing many of those same students--as well as some new faces--with new pieces in spring 2026!

A gift to Momenta is a gift to these and other composers whose music we bring to life and add to Momenta’s unique personal repertoire.

Sometimes it feels like it’s never too late for a new work to fall into our laps. That being said, 2026 is already looking like a pretty fruitful year. In February, as part of our deepened partnership with Music From Japan, we will be premiering works by Shintaro Shibayama and Michiru Nakamura in NYC--and giving those works their second performance less than a week later at Binghamton. In March at Yeshiva University, Stephanie will be premiering David Glaser’s viola concertino (with the rest of Momenta in the ripieno, of course). And on Momenta Festival 2026, we already have two premieres lined up: Matthew Greenbaum’s Piano Quintet (featuring guest artist Steve Beck) and Marilyn Shrude’s String Quartet.
To call Matthew Greenbaum a longtime-friend of Momenta would be an understatement. At his invitation, a sort of proto-Momenta (organized by Stephanie) performed at Temple University and in NYC. The evolution into a full-fledged quartet followed soon after, and Momenta would continue to perform at Temple University for many years. We’re looking forward to releasing his quartet More Venerable Canons on our upcoming CD (look out for it in 2026!), and of course we can’t wait to introduce his Piano Quintet to you.
Our friendship with Marilyn Shrude is four years old and counting. In December 2021, we performed her Secrets, a song cycle for string quartet and soprano, and were immediately taken by her musical language. Less than a year later, Marilyn offered to write a string quartet for us. Four years after that (and 10 months from today) that quartet will receive its premiere on Momenta Festival 2026!
This is a time when valuable things are being devalued. If you’re on this list, we know you value music and what Momenta does.

Please consider a
tax-deductible donation to Momenta Quartet to support more world premieres next year!
And now our gift to you - a blast from Momenta's past! Here is a video of us playing the first piece ever written for Momenta - Matthew Greenbaum's Castelnau. We love the piece and have kept it in our repertoire over the years. This video is special to me, as it's from the very first Momenta Festival I played, back in 2016. Enjoy!

Thank you for your support and best wishes for the holiday season,

Alex
