Binghamton University’s Music Now! presents Momenta Quartet in a program featuring Janáček’s String Quartet No. 2 “Intimate Letters” and Persian composer Reza Vali’s Nayshâboorak (Calligraphy No. 6) alongside works by Binghamton student composers and a staged collaboration with campus Ghanian Ewe dancers and African drumming.

Momenta pairs Tan Dun’s Ghost Opera (1994) with the String Quartet No. 2 (1911-13) of Charles Ives, two works that explore the ideas of musical narratives, theatricality, and unexpected cultural references in individually dramatic and striking ways.

Armed with water gongs, cymbals, rocks, and an array of other instruments, Momenta Quartet and virtuoso pipa player Zhou Yi return to Flushing Town Hall to perform Tan Dun’s electrifying and haunting Ghost Opera (1994).
