Stephanie

Viola

Acclaimed by the New York Times for her “virtuoso flair,” Stephanie Griffin has performed internationally as a soloist and chamber musician. Her greatest commitment is to the music of Indonesian composer Tony Prabowo, with whom she has collaborated for over eight years in America and Indonesia. She has worked closely with numerous other composers both as a soloist and with some of New York’s premiere new music ensembles, including Continuum, Parnassus and the Argento Chamber Ensemble.

In 2003 Ms. Griffin traveled to Istanbul for her first engagement with Argento, at which she played Tristan Murail’s seminal chamber work “Ethers” and Michael Lévinas’ “Les lettres enlacées” for solo viola under the auspices of the International Festival of Spectral Music. More recently, she gave the American premiere of Michael Jarrell’s chamber concerto “More Leaves” as part of the ensemble’s collaboration with IRCAM at Miller Theater. Argento also featured her as a soloist in their performance of the first half of Gérard Grisey’s monumental cycle “Les espaces acoustiques” at St. Paul’s Chapel, Columbia University.

Ms. Griffin’s other notable solo engagements include performances of Salvatore Sciarrino’s “Tre notturni brillianti” at the Lincoln Center Festival in 2003; Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 at Merkin Hall in February 2006; the solo viola part in Tony Prabowo’s opera “The King’s Witch” at Alice Tully Hall; contemporary viola recitals in Jakarta and Chicago; Walton Concerto at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England; and Schnittke’s Viola Concerto with the Juilliard Symphony.

In addition to her work with the Momenta Quartet, Ms. Griffin is a member of the mixed chamber ensemble Transfiguration and of SONYC, the conductorless String Orchestra of New York City. In the orchestral domain, she is a long-standing member of Riverside Symphony and the principal violist of Princeton Symphony.

An active improviser, she has worked with traditional Indonesian musicians and free jazz legend Butch Morris, among others. She also performs as a guest violist with Carl Maguire’s avant-jazz ensemble Floriculture. Ms. Griffin has recorded for Aeon, Centaur, Koch, Arte Nova, Harmolodic and Siam Records, and recently released a double CD set of the music of Tony Prabowo on Aksara Records. She holds a doctorate from The Juilliard School, where she studied with Samuel Rhodes. Former teachers have included Wayne Brooks (Rice University), Paul DeClerck and William Gordon.
