John Gurrin

John is an artist who changes mediums with alarming regularity. He studied film-making at McGill University in Montreal and at Syracuse University. Early on in his career he was invited to the Venice Biennale for his interactive computer piece “One Hour of Love.” As he worked in film, video and computer-based forms it became apparent that he had an unusual gift for sound. Shortly after graduating from Syracuse he was hired by New York University Tisch School of the Arts in the sound department of their film school, where he continues to serve as full-time faculty. As a sound designer he has worked with Metallica (Unforgiven), and Nike and has a wide experience in location sound for film. Credits include ”When the Road Bends”, “Capturing the Friedmans”, “Blood Brothers” and “On Hallowed Ground.”

Recently he has been more active recording music. Some of his studio recordings include Pete Galub’s “Boy Gone Wrong,” Tony Prabowo’s “Doa Persembunyian” and Mathew Greenbaum’s “Psalter.” He has also recorded many live concerts for the Momenta Quartet, Argento Chamber Ensemble, the League of Composers/ISCM, Butch Morris and for visiting artists at the Austrian Cultural Forum.

His own creative work is unique, poetic and evocative. He excels in the realm of photography, as evidenced by his works included on this website. In addition to photographs of musicians, he has a broad portfolio of photographs revealing his unique perspective on such far-flung places as Rajhastan, Jakarta, Istanbul, Estonia, Ireland, England, Vancouver and Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

He is currently assembling video installations in his studio in Brooklyn. For more information on John’s work, please contact him at john@momentaquartet.com. mailto:john@momentaquartet.comshapeimage_2_link_0
